As part of the $25 million Accommodation for the Homeless Initiative, the Victorian Government has funded the development of two new youth refuges. This will help meet the high demand for young people experiencing homelessness.
In March 2018, 6 services in areas of high demand have been funded to deliver diverse housing options for young people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness including young people leaving care and exiting the youth justice system. This new $10.1 million investment is being delivered as part of the government’s $109 million homelessness package.
The Victorian Government has invested in new models of supported accommodation for young people experiencing homelessness and those leaving out of home care. This includes $3.75 million to develop a cluster unit supported accommodation facility in Wyndham, and $900,000 to establish a ‘pop-up village’ for young people aged 18 to 21 leaving out of home care. Building has commenced and should be completed in late 2019.
The Department of Health and Human Services has commenced a review of the youth refuges. Consultations have commenced with youth homelessness services to better meet the needs of young people experiencing homelessness and assist them to achieve independence.
